C difficile is a gram-positive, spore-forming anaerobic bacillus that was first linked to disease in 1978, when it was identified as the causative agent of seudomembranous colitis. It has been associated with gastrointestinal infections ranging in severity from asymptomatic colonization to severe diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, toxic megacolon, intestinal perforation, and death.”
